Our Green Business Practices
Red Moons Herbs is located at Earthaven Ecovillage, an intentional, permaculture-based community. For us, green business and sustainability aren’t just buzz words: they’re the way of life we’ve chosen. And this commitment has its rewards: every year we see more plants and animals on the land. Biodiversity increases, and this brings us joy.
Here are the specific ways we bring our love of the earth into our business:
- We use renewable energy sources.
-
Our office and apothecary run entirely on solar and hydro electricity. Our space is heated by wood: the waste from trees cleared and lumber milled on-site. Our hot water is heated with this wood.
We use used and recycled materials.
Our packaging– boxes, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and padded envelopes– is reused. We use recycled office products, including our copy paper, envelopes, file folders, and bags. Our building is insulated with a non-toxic cellulose insulation made from recycled cardboard boxes.
- We minimize our waste.
-
Rather than simply recycling our containers, trusting and leaving them to someone else to deal with, we wash, sterilize, and reuse our bottles and jars as much as possible. We use, wash, and reuse cloth towels rather than use disposable paper towels, which are the norm in the industry. And we compost all our paper on site, returning the carbon to the land to feed the soil.
- We use nontoxic ingredients and manufacturing practices.
Natural medicines are, of course, less toxic for the consumer as well as the Earth. When you simply hand-pick and soak plants in alcohol, oil, or vinegar, there’s no need for high-tech machinery, petroleum, or artificial ingredients. And everything is fully biodegradable.
-
We choose nontoxic materials in our office and apothecary for your sake as well as ours—down to our non-toxic correction fluid. Our floor is Marmoleum, a precursor to linoleum made from cork, pine resin, and linseed oil
- We use common, not endangered, plants as much as possible.
-
Whenever possible, we use only abundant, commonly-occurring plants (i.e., “weeds”) while allowing and encouraging threatened or endangered species to reestablish themselves. Our commitment to preserving the earth’s natural resources guides all our wildcrafting techniques, and stands we return to each year flourish under these practices.
- We use local materials.
-
To reduce transportation costs and environmental impact, we source the goods and services we need as locally as possible. Our staff live nearby and walk to work. The building itself is made from trees from the land. The walls are finished with earthen plaster from the clay ground below.
- We use local plants.
-
More than any other company we know of, Red Moon Herbs focuses on using common, local plants. We love to inspire and educate others about the benefits of the “weeds” right around them. Through articles, classes, and the Southeast Women’s Herbal Conference, we teach people how to make their own herbal medicines. It doesn’t GET any more local than your own backyard!
